Reknowned American writer J D Salinger, whose novel ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ achieved cult status owing to the millions of readers it inspired, died on Thursday at the age of 91.

Salinger had lived in self-imposed isolation for decades in a small, remote house in New Hampshire.

The Catcher in the Rye, with its teenage protagonist- the twisted, rebellious Holden Caulfield, was published in 1951, and captures the true angst and dilemma of modern adolescence.
