Some troops could leave Afghanistan before July 2011: Gates
2010-03-10 [13:12:00 hrs] | | US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has said that some of the US troops deployed in Afghanistan could leave the country before President Barack Obama’s announced July 2011 date to begin the withdrawal process.
Without giving specifics, Gates says, ‘it would have to be conditions-based.’
Gates raised the possibility of some early withdrawals during a visit to a base where Afghan recruits are trained by US and British instructors.
Afghan Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak said his troops are eager to take on the responsibility for defending the country, but gave no indication of when that might be possible.
